Peter Mansell, Gilder

Peter started at Royal Worcester in 1947 as an apprentice gilder. He learnt his trade under the guidance of Ivor Williams and several older gilders who had been in the department for years. Peter was made redundant in the late 50s, but later came back to work in the Acid Room under Bob Turner. He also worked in the Portland building, but never enjoyed it there and described it as an ‘aircraft hangar’.  He married Joan, a china trimmer at the factory, and the young couple were offered a Royal Worcester house in Severn Street. Peter was still living there when he recorded this interview and could remember visiting the house when it was a sweet shop when he first started working at the factory in 1947.
